Ramadaniyat 3: Between Generosity and Extravagance | A Refreshing Tropical Fruit Salad Recipe

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The food of one is sufficient for two, and the food of the two is enough for the four, and the food of the four is enough for the eight.” (Narrated by Muslim.) Hospitality is not a matter of kindness, but it is a duty and the right of the guest to honor him. Al-Bukhaari narrated: “Your guest has a right on you.”

The food blessing is when you eat with a group of people, such as relatives and friends in the holy month of Ramadan. But these “feasts” we honor with them our guests should not be based on unnecessary extravagance.

The extravagance in buying food in Ramadan has become a major feature of many Arab families in Ramadan, by purchasing quantities exceeding their needs. Their reasoning is its the month of fasting and generosity and connecting with family and relatives through invitations to attend Ramadan meals.

Many of us forget that it is a month of fasting and worship in the first place and that there are many poor families in need of food that is thrown in the trash. Of course, there is no objection in preparing large quantities of food, but that the rest of the food, which is still good for consumption should be donated to those who need it.

 

Tropical Fruit Salad – A Refreshing and Healthy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of cut pineapple

  • 1 cup of papaya

  • 2 cups of mango pieces

  • 1 cup of kiwi slices

  • 1 cup of cranberries

  • 1/4 cup of honey

  • Lemon juice

  • Mint and lemon slices for decoration

Preparation:

Place the pineapple, papaya, mango, kiwi and berries in a large bowl.

Mix honey and lemon juice together in a small bowl until the mixture become smooth.

Add the mixture to the fruit and mix them gently. Garnish salad with mint leaves and lemon slices. Enjoy with your family and guests.
