Ramadaniyat 7: Do not Criticize the Food You Do Not Like | Turkish Eggplant Appetizer Recipe

The grace of food is one of the greatest blessings of God Almighty. There is no life for man without food. And the Almighty said on the tongue of our Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him): “And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.” (Al ٍShu’ara : 79)

It is necessary to thank God for this great blessing, therefore, should you should criticize food that you do not desire in all cases.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that he said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never criticized any food (he was invited to) but he used to eat if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked it. (Al Bukhari)

When invited to Iftar during the holy month of Ramadan, while the family, loved ones and friends are gathered at the Iftar table, some might have unpleasant behaviors in front of the family or friends while eating.

Pay attention to your actions and follow the etiquette of food. So it is the etiquette of food to take only the right amount of food and leave what you do not like without embarrassing the host. Also, the host might end up throwing your leftovers in the trash, and it is iniquity.



A Recipe for a Light Turkish Eggplant Appetizer


  • Two tablespoons olive oil

  • Garlic, minced

  • Four cups of eggplant cubed (with peel)

  • Teaspoon salt

  • A cup of red sweet pepper

  • Two cups of tomatoes, cut small pieces

  • Two teaspoons of cumin

  • Three quarters teaspoon honey

  • Three quarters teaspoon honey

  • A teaspoon of paprika

  • Half teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Two tablespoons lemon juice

  • Parsley, minced


Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat, then saute the garlic until it wilts, for about 30 seconds.

Add the eggplant, salt, and stir from time to time until it softens a little, for 5-6 minutes.

Add the sweet pepper to the frying pan and stir it from time to time until it is cooked about 3-4 minutes.

Add chopped tomatoes and all remaining ingredients in the pan, then raise the temperature until it boils.

Lower the temperature and let it simmer about 30 minutes. Sprinkle the chopped parsley on top. Enjoy with your family.
