If you have one kidney stone, there is a high risk that you might get another one. Therefore, you need to make some adjustments to your diet plan to prevent kidney stones.
New research found that more people, especially young women, are getting kidney stones than in the past. This might be due to poor diet, rising obesity rates, and a low level of exercise.
A kidney stone usually begins as a small crystal-like material and it gradually builds up into a larger, solid mass. When crystals combine together to form a kidney stone, it can stick to the lining of the kidney or settle in an area where urine cannot carry it out of the body.
There is not one type of diet that will prevent all kidney stones since different dietary factors can cause different types of kidney stones. Kidney stones are classified according to the type of material that causes them. But kidney stones may be prevented or delayed by eating certain foods.
Drink Lots of Fluids
Stay hydrated and drink lots of water. The most important preventive measure is to drink a sufficient amount of water. It is best for any kind of stone. Water helps to prevent a high concentration of salts and minerals that clump together to form stones.
Eat Vitamin A Rich Foods
Vitamin A is necessary to keep the lining of the urinary tract healthy, which help discourage the formation of kidney stones. Example of foods rich in vitamin A: sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots, broccoli, cantaloupes, and beef liver.
Take Magnesium and Vitamin B6
Magnesium and vitamin B6 are used by the body to convert oxalate into other substances. Magnesium has been shown to inhibit crystal formation thus reducing the risk for forming kidney stones. While vitamin B6 may lower the oxalate in the urine. Therefore, vitamin B6 deficiency can lead to an increase in kidney stones.
Use Herbal Remedies
Some herbs help reduce the size of kidney stones. Consume more foods and drinks that help get rid of kidney stone such as dandelion root tea, apple cider vinegar, pomegranate juice, basil, and celery juice or seed. You may also want to consider drinking lemon juice. Research suggests that lemon juice may be helpful in reducing the risk of calcium oxalate stone formation.
A body of an inactive person will accumulate a lot of calcium in the bloodstream. Too much calcium in your bloodstream can weaken your bones and create kidney stones. Therefore, if you have kidney stones, you should stay physically active to return calcium into the bones.
Limiting the following foods from your diet helps prevent kidney stones from developing:
Watch Your Calcium Intake
A high percentage of kidney stones are made up of calcium products. If you know that your kidney stones are calcium based, you should reduce the intake of foods and supplements rich in calcium, but do not completely eliminated from your diet. Low amounts of calcium in your diet will increase your chances of forming calcium oxalate kidney stones.
Avoid Antacids High in Calcium
Some antacids are very high in calcium. If you have a kidney stone, make sure to take antacids that do not contain calcium.
Do Not Eat a Lot of Oxalate-rich Foods
Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type. Therefore, avoid eating foods rich in oxalate when you have kidney stones. Example of oxalate-rich foods: spinach, nuts, french fries, potato chips, beets, and wheat bran.
Do Not Take Vitamin C Supplement
Large doses of Vitamin C may increase the amount of oxalate in your urine, increasing the risk of kidney stone formation. If you are taking a supplement, do not take more than 500 mg of Vitamin C daily.
Do Not Get Too Much Vitamin D
Too much vitamin D can also cause kidney stones because it leads to an excess of calcium in all parts of the body. But it is almost impossible to get too much vitamin D from sunlight or from foods.
Lower Your Sodium Intake
Consuming lots of sodium raises the possibilities for kidney stones. Eating less salt lower urine calcium levels, the lower the calcium the lower the risk of developing kidney stones.
Consume Less of Animal Protein
Eating large amounts of protein may increase the risk of kidney stone formation. If you are at risk of having kidney stones, you should not eat too much of animal protein.
Make sure to consult your doctor, if you get intense pain.
